Rare But Not Worth Much: Savage Mondo Blitzers
In these articles, I’m going to highlight one toy or toy line that’s fairly hard to come by, but not really worth anything. Just because something is hard to find and is certainly cool, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to fetch a high price. Toy lines that are off the beaten GI Joe, Motu and Transformer path but deserve honorable mention.
For this installment of Rare But Not Worth Much, I’m looking at Savage Mondo Blitzers!
With that name alone, you should already know that they came out in 1991. Savage Mondo Blitzers were put out by Kenner in 1991, and they were basically 1.5 inch figures attached to small skateboard-like cars. The figures didn’t have any articulation, but they were pretty detailed, and the skateboards rolled well. The Blitzers were split up into different gangs with names like The Dudes of Disaster, The Chunk Blowers, The Skull Crushers and Concrete Breakfast Gang. You should already want some based on those gang titles. You could get Lightning launchers and shoot the Blitzers at each other to fight. (launcher is the title picture) The Savage Mondo Blitzers came in 4-packs or a larger package that came with 8 and a launcher. There was also a Savage Mondo Blitzer carrying case that could hold 48 of them.
These guys were designed to be on the gross side with individual names like Eye Pus, Shishke Bob, Fat Ax, Snot Shot and Wedgyson, so they were sorta like rolling Garbage Pail Kids. Predictably, with anything that was supposed to appeal to little boys’ love of grossness, there were fussy parents that didn’t like them. There were several parent and teacher groups that called for their boycott. Which probably only made them more popular and pleased the Kenner bigwigs.
You may not be able to find them at your average garage sale, but they’re easily found up for online auction. If you decide you want to get your hands on some, they typically go for about $10-15 for a sealed 4-pack or about $1 each for loose ones. They definitely won’t kill your bank account tracking them down.
